Saying that I love the new Maison Margiela collection for the S/S 2012 is not enough. The two main materials used in the collection are the transparent plastic bags and the beautifully decorated Persian carpets. A genious combination of the contemporary one-use object and the complexity of the artisan's craftmaship of the rugs. Dating back to 6th century Persia, the luxurious rugs formed the "runway", and served as inspiration for clothing. Plastic wrapping was first explored in Margiela's A/W02 collection and transparency has been a key theme throughout the house's history.Illustrations by Tom Baxter

'WOW!!' was my reaction when faced with these images of supermodel Agyness Deyn's house in trendy Williamsburg.
The edgy contemporary boysh look she created for herself has little to do with what this rooms express: a funny chaotic crossbreed in between a vintage shop, an 'African safari village and a tea saloon of late 17th Century France'.

Interior Designer Chrisopher Jenner is well known for his luxurious taste. The studio has worked with the Diptyque family at the London store Liberty, and the project was so successful that Diptyque gave the designer carte blanche for the renovation of its New York store.
‘For me it was really about discovering the brand history, finding the true essence of that brand and what that really represents,’ says Jenner.
Founded in 1961 by three friends, Diptyque originally produced printed fabrics, so Jenner decided to take some of those original prints and incorporate them into the designs of the wallpaper and the fabric.

Hole has been one of my favourite bands for some time and I've always been curious to know how Love's house would look like: rock, girly, trashy or glamourous...So when I bumped into these images on ElleUk I was a little disappointed. The whole atmosphere of the apartment has a slightly romantic-decadent feeling to it but none of the elements really stand out. The rooms are filled with blend antique objects and textiles combined with Damien Hirst originals and decorative vintage lace dresses on top of light blue damask wallpaper.

Each room of the hotel has been dressed up by graduates and alumni of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute with a different theme but with the same idea of dressing up a room like a manequin. Piet Hein Eek Atelier in Eindhoven is really something. The massive hangar spaces function as restaurant, shop, offices, exhibtion spaces and a big wood workshop where all his pieces are being created.
Although the atmosphere felt a little too commercial, the space works well all together and some of design pieces on show are very special, such as the church-like chandelier in the restaurant area and the big crane carring the diamond shaped lamp. Absolutely worth checking it out!

Jaime Lacasa is probably one of the most stylish men in Madrid. Being an Interior Stylist and owner of furniture and menswear boutique Scooter & Jimmy’s Scooter, this is how his house looks like: ready for a photoshoot. Every object in the apartement is related to the one next to it in an 'unpredicted' harmony. The glass frame in the middle of the living room is such a powerful element, together with the blue full-lenght bookcase does it all. The blue-brown combination of unique old furniture pieces is very charming.

The project is a 5.30 m wide house situated on an equally narrow site in Bilzen, Belgium, near the Holland frontier.

The other day we had a lecture by Concrete Architecture office in Amsterdam.
One of the projects they presented was the CitizenM hotel. The aim of this concept hotel is to provide a new type of experience for a new type of traveler: guests that dont stay in their rooms for the entire duration of their stay but they prefere social areas.
All furniture is provided by Vitra, thats uses the space as a showroom for their new products.

UNDERGROUND Exhibition by The Stone Twins

UNDERGROUND is the name of the exhibition by the Stone Twins about the illegal activity of treasure hunting.
Entering the exhibition space is an astonishing experience.
The dark room is filled with illuminated empty glass display cabinets of various dimensions which 'exhibit' the illigal findings of many passionate men with an addiction for hidden precious objects.
Brilliant idea. Beautifully made.
The exhibition is now on display at the Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg.

Lisson Gallery Opening@Milano

The first international branch of the London-based institution Lisson Gallery opened in Milano in September.
Its wonderful location, an early 20th century building, is next door to Palazzo degli Atellani, a private residence from the Renaissance owned by the Castellini family who kindly offered the use of their private elegant garden for sculptures or installations.
For its inauguration, Lisson Gallery founder and director Nicholas Logsdail and Annette Hofmann, the Artistic Director of the new Milan gallery, have chosen a collective exhibit curated by Ryan Gander with the title I know about creative block and I know not to call it by name, which will be presented from September 16 to November 5.

Last night I was at the opening of Rotterdam Architecture Film Festival (6-9 Oct.).
The festival opened with a critical documentary on the endless developments at the gates to Europe, Istanbul.
I found the viewpoint of the director extreme and one-sided, but still very intersting and a must see.
No views of the inside beauty of the city,wich I was hoping to get delighted by, can be seen in ths movie.
Ekümenopolis touches the basics of urban planning, it researches the urban transformation both on the regional scale as on the street and it challenges the people of Istanbul to actively take care of their surroundigs and us living in western countries to stop and think before making egocentric projects unrelated to the place where they will be built.

Taking inspiration by the japanese folding beds, the photographer Yusuke Suzuki has created a page turner of a bed that looks like an oversized book. At night it is opened up for sleepy heads to sleep in and during the day it is shut closed to create enough space for children to play in their room.

Recently I've been concerned about the way art institutions have been using the 'silent almost religious white box' to welcome their visitors into the world of art. Is it really the most efficient way to experience art?
Here I found a brilliant example of a new way art spaces could be lived, where french designers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec filled the Raphael Court of the V&A museum with fabric covered foam– 240 square meters of the gallery floor are covered with the Textile Field, to encourage visitors to lie down and look up at the Renaissance art.

'The thing about pigeons is that they are democratic...they'll crap on anything', says ironicly Adrian Searle from the Guardian.
While preparing himself for his frst retrospective at Guggenheim NY, Maurizio Cattelan welcomes visitors at this years' Biennale with 2000 stuffed pigeons placed on rafters throughout the whole Giardini's main pavilion.
Pigeons and Venice are indeed related, but Cattelan's metaphore fore using those birds was the idea of 'being watched by strangers in our midst, by those who frighten us.' (MC)

Christian Boltanski: Chance @ Venice Biennale 2011

Chance, destiny....is the theme behind Christian Boltanski installation for the French Pavilion at this year's Biennale.
Probably the best piece I've seen this year.
The work is about the eternal question if we have the power to change our lives, our destinies and paths, if we have the free will.
To represent this important theme, the artist created a 'the wheel of fortune,' wich contains a moving loop of paper upon which hundreds of childrenʼs faces have been printed.
Traversing across structural steel piping, the strip stops randomly from time to time and an alarm sounds,illuminating one of the childrenʼs faces on an oversized screen.
The process then starts over, until the walkway stops again and the alarm signals fateʼs next choice.
A very powerful installation that makes visitor question about their own lives and destinies while living the pavilion.

Going from one place to another for Venice Contemporary Art Biennale I could not but notice the beauty of its architecture and amazing details within its interiors.
I was amazed by the variety of marbles and richness of materials...Venice was built with no cheap materials, plastics or crazy colors, everything fits together in perfect harmony.
Im in love with every corner of this city...wich I think is the most beautiful on the planet.

“Your rainbow panorama” establishes a dialogue with the existing architecture and reinforces what was already there, that is to say the view across the city. New Birth to a Lisbon 18th century House

This Dutch style half-timbered house dating the 18th century was destroyed during the Great Lisbon Earthquake of November 1755 but now, thanks to the work of Portuguese architect Jose Adriao the house is being brought back into life.
What I love the most about this work is the way the architects kept a few very beautiful and construction elements and precious details, such as the floor boards, the wooden ceilings in overlapping boards, the internal and external tiles, the window frames and doors.

While listening to Li Edelkoort's speach at What Design Can Do conference in Amsterdam, I was wondering how would her home look like.
I imagined her having all sorts of different contemporary art objects (but I can only spot a Yayoi Kusama pumpkin) and the newest releases of Eindhoven Design Academy...instead, her house in Paris is an extremely simple, white interior, with only a few natural wood furniture pieces.
The only concessions to the decor are small memory-objects collected all over the world, which make her home feel like a bolt-hole.

Topman Oxford Street is expanding its borders with the creation of a personal shopping experience designed by London based studio Lee Broom(previously worked with fashion designer Vivienne Westwood).
“Coming from a fashion background, it’s been exciting to work with TOPMAN to create their personal shopping suite. The suite has a grand, yet youthful, feel to it as it was important to ensure that men felt comfortable within the space. This space was designed to engage, inspire and give men a personal chill-out zone as they step through their shopping choices.” Lee Broom
The space is dived into three consultation areas, an XBOX gaming area and an Asahi bar, all surrounded by rich materials, herringbone panelling, with a strong contemporary look on the traditional gentleman’s club. Worth a look.

The other day I found myself opening a misterious flat and purple pack where I fond this beautiful catalogue of Informal Arrangements of a South African slum, photographed by Peter Bialobrzeski.
No people are to be seen in this images so, like a voyeur, my eyes could go through each page/room searching for small details telling the likings, the dreams and desires of the people living them.
At first the images seduced me but then became disturbing at a closer look, and one starts wondering how someone could call this home, how could anyone live like that and so on.
I guess home is a matter of adaptation, of making a place feel yours.
I'll keep reading through this book like to a bedtime story. :)

I feel it everywhere around me.

Bali, as some of you know already, is to me the most wonderful place it the World (at least of what I've seen so far).
Each detail of Balinese architecture fits with its environment and it can be seen in its courtyards, pavilions, garden elements, and open spaces.
The design of each Indobali dwelling, as you can see in this Como Shabhala Estate, reflects a sensitivity to the existing natural flora with the existing trees being kept as accents to the gardens.
The perfect summer retreat.

100% Design Rotterdam

On saturday I went to 100% Design fair in Rotterdam, held in the imposing Van Nelle Factory. The building, made of glass and steel and built according to light, air and space, was built between 1925 and 1931, functioning as a factory producing coffee, tea and tobacco.
Differently from the impressive and aseptic feel of the architectural context, the fair itself had a very cosy and domestic atmosphere.
The prize for the best stand went to our school, WDKA. Goed zo!

What Design Can Do started today.
To me the most interesting designers and thinkers of today's talks were Julia Lohmann, bringing us back to the value and beauty of our inner animal through the medium of design pieces wich can more easily enter into people's lifes and make us think;
architect and urbanist Rohan Shivkumar, questioning Indian contemporary urbanism and westerned 'fictionalist' constructions, giving sensible solutions to the overpopulated cites issue, by reading the exhisting and furfilling the needs of the informal. Inspiring.
Giorgio Camuffo and Daniel Eatock gave the audience a moment of laughter and naivety, although with different approaches to their cities.
Eindhoven academy graduated designer Dror Benshetritand showed his visions and how they became real. He me think that anything we want to create is possible, as long as the idea is powerful, there is always a way to make it real...the sky is the limit :)
And last but not least the Maestro Oliviero Toscani gave an incredibly powerful and inspiring speach on creativity. A day to remember...looking forward for tomorrow.

So many times we can see fashion pieces getting their inspiration from the art world. In this case Lucio Fontana's "Concetti spaziali" gave the hint for the creation of Alexander Wang's fall/winter collection 2011/12.
When this gesture gets so directly translated into fashion to me it just looses its poetry falling into pure aesthetics.

A friend told me I should try to make ceramics, for the meditative sense of its action and I guess seing this beutuful cups sperimentations made me think of the beauty of the clay and how the same shape can change its feeling by the way its manipulated and transormed.

My eastern european roots got me fascinated by these images from "Roma Interiors", a series of portraits capturing the private worlds of gipsies with their coloreful, loud and floral pattern combinations.

Beach Cafe in Mykonos

Starting to think of my summer vacation and possible locations where to go, I found this beautiful holistic cafe on the beach of Mykonos designed by K-Studio.
The beauty of this interior is the 60 cm deep natural reed-thatched roof installation that serves a dual purpose between aesthetics and offering shade during 40 C days. When the wind blows, it rustles the reeds and circulates air.
Reminded me of my ecodesign project that I am just finishing up...

I guess I can feel the heat coming from the outside and seeing this images of totally opened interiors with green wild forest coming in made me want to share the fresh feeling with you.
Campana Brothers home in São Paulo is very earthy and the architecture feels totally trapped in by the surrounding nature. Their designs then, add a tone of color and irony to the whole picture.

This year, Paris' beautuful spaces of the Grand Palais are hosting the new work by indian-born, british-based artist Anish Kapoor.
The space was originally unveiled at the 1900 universal exhibition and hosted guest artists such as Anselm Fiefer, Richard Serra and Christian Boltanski.
Anish Kapoor has dedicated this work to the missing Chinese artist Ai Weiwei.
Ai has been missing for about a month, in the hands of the Chinese authorities.

Since SS 2011 campaign by Prada I can see everything in color and lines...
And this time interior design was easily influenced as I could notice in the Design Week Edition of Elle Decoration Italy...pinks and blues and greens with purples..everything goes with everything...as long as its nicely put on a series of horizontal lines.

I already mentioned this fabulous Greek fashion designer on the post Room on a Woman showing you the collection she made at CSM.
Well, this time she really blowed my mind with this shooting made by NY based photorgepher Erik Madigan Heck, who was inspired by the late interior paintings of the 19th century French painters Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard.
The styling is by Heidi Bivens and the Set Design by Shaun Kato Samuel.
Haven't seen such stunning powerful and creative work in a long time.
